The first edition of Montevideo Biennale will host over 50 artists from the five continents and will take place at El Prado Rural Exhibition from Oct. 15 to Nov. 15, 2012. The Art Director is Gustavo Tabares, Uruguay’s Curator is Patricia Bentancourt.
General Curator Alfons Hug named the 1st edition of Bienal de Montevideo “El Gran Sur”, and in the words of the curator, “its purpose is to determine whether a distinctive aesthetic approach exists under the Southern Cross”.
Collateral events will take place in other city venues: museums, cultural centers, art galleries, public spaces, the airport, the port, and also the streets.
Talks, seminars, discussions, workshops, roundtables and conferences will be held in many city spots which, together with the Educational Project, are targeted at privileging education and consolidation of Montevideo Biennale as a point of reference in art, research and social inclusion.
Alfons Hug, twice Curator of Sao Paulo Biennale, and of Bienal del Fin del Mundo at Ushuaia, Argentina, among other international events, will be the General Curator of Montevideo Biennale. At present, he is the Director of the Goethe Institute in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and ILLA Curator of Venice Biennale 2011 and Curitiba Biennale 2011.
