Contemporary sculpture and installation festival Sculpture Quadrennial Riga „Conservatism and Liberalism” will run from September 10th to October 28th. Festival is about to discover fragile border between conservatism and liberalism through events taking place in Riga city and Wagner hall.
Festival will launch on September 10th with the opening of the main exhibition „Being Good” in the historical building of Wagner Hall at 7PM whereas objects in the city will be on view starting from 3PM till the end of the festival in October. The outdoor exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Forum of Contemporary Culture “White Night”.
Several screenings of virtual reality movie „Clouds over Sidra”, performance by artist Hu-Be „Scribblitti” and photography exhibition by journalist Marko Risović will be presented by festival partners at French Institute in collaboration with The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
On Sunday, September 11th between 12PM and 5.30PM at the new building of Art Academy of Latvia curator and artist Justin Charles Hoover, art critic Adam Mazur, artist and curator Heiko Pfreundt from “Project Space Festival Berlin” and curator Hadas Maor will give talks on “Conservatism and Liberalism: Appearances in contemporary culture”. Talks will be held in English. Free admission.
On Monday, September 12th festival participants will give artist talks on their works and creative process at Wagner Hall and Riga city between 4PM to 7PM. Talks in English and Latvian.
On Tuesday, September 13th at Art Academy of Latvia and Wagner Hall master classes and workshops will take place with international guests starting from 10.30 AM till 4 PM. Limited seating. Advance registration at squadrennial@gmail.com.
In addition to festival program satellite exhibitions and events will be presented by festival friends and partners. At Bank M2M Europe, Antonijas Street 3 a pop-up exhibition „The First Crew” by Denis Prasolov will be on view for three days – Tuesday, September 13 – 12PM-2PM, Wednesday, September 14 – 12PM-4PM and Thursday, September 15 – 4PM-8PM.
Festival artists Jacob Jessen and Kim de Ruysscher are also featured in satellite exhibition “Terra Incognita: Familiar Infinity” curated by festival’s co-curator Kirke Kangro at KUMU Art Museum in Tallinn. Exhibition runs till September 12th. Starting from September 20th British artist James Prevett will show at Raja gallery in Tallinn. Valentijn Goethals and Tomas Lootens will present a project at Latvian Museum of Architecture from September 16th to October 7.
The curatorial team of festival unites artists Aigars Bikše (Latvia) and Kirke Kangro (Estonia), and curator Elona Lubyte (Lithuania). Festival team consists of Edvards Percevs, Artūrs Arnis, Santa Mičule, Kristiāna Kārkliņa, Gerda Čevere and Patrīcija Jurševska. Festival is organized by non-profit and non-government cultural organization MMIC.
