Skulpturenpark Köln has announced that Chus Martínez, the head of the Institute of Art of the FHNW Academy of Arts and Design in Basel, will curate the 9th edition of its biennial exhibition. KölnSkulptur #9 will open on 15 October 2017 and mark the park’s twentieth anniversary.
The Skulpturenpark Köln was founded in 1997 through the private initiative of Drs. Michael and Eleonore Stoffel and has since gained an unrivalled reputation within the national and international art community as well as amongst the general public. It has commissioned more than one hundred fifty artworks by major artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Jenny Holzer, Isa Genzken, Dan Graham, Fischli and Weiss, and Anish Kapoor.
Born in Spain, Chus Martínez has a background in philosophy and art history. She has served as chief curator at El Museo Del Barrio in New York and El Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA). She was the head of the department of artistic direction and a member of the core agent group for Documenta 13, directed the Frankfurter Kunstverein, and worked as the artistic director at Bilbao’s Sala Rekalde. She also curated the Cypriot Pavilion at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2005 and, in 2010, was the curatorial advisor for the 29th Bienal de São Paulo. Martínez lectures and writes regularly for art publications. Sternberg Press recently published her book Club Univers (2016).
