We return to the Art Gallery of New South Wales in December for the fifth event in the Biennale Archive Stories series, joined by guests whose contributions to the Biennale and Sydney’s cultural life have been multifaceted and profound. Architect and collector Penelope Seidler AM has visited every edition of the Biennale of Sydney since its inaugural exhibition in 1973. Freelance writer and curator Anthony Bond OAM directed the acclaimed 9th Biennale, The Boundary Rider in 1992/93, and he engaged with numerous editions of the Biennale during his term at the Art Gallery of NSW as Director Curatorial. Judy Annear worked alongside René Block as Exhibition Manager on the 8th Biennale in 1990 and was closely involved as an advisor or writer with Biennales from 1979 until the 1990s.
Speaker Biographies
Judy Annear is a writer, curator and adjunct at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. Her field of research is modern and contemporary practice underpinned by a focus on periods of major technological change. She was founding director of Artspace, Sydney (1982–83); curator of Zones of love: contemporary art from Japan (Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney 1992); Perspecta 95 (Art Gallery of NSW); and senior curator photographs at the Art Gallery of NSW (1995–2016).
Anthony Bond OAM is a freelance writer, curator and until recently Director Curatorial at the Art Gallery of NSW, where he was responsible for collecting and displaying international contemporary art since 1984. He publishes in journals and catalogues in Australia and overseas and was the curator for the 9th Biennale of Sydney, The Boundary Rider (1992–93); Trace, the inaugural Liverpool Biennale (1999); and co-curator for the first Johannesburg Biennale (1994).
Penelope Seidler AM is an architect and collector of contemporary art who has visited every edition of the Biennale of Sydney since its inaugural exhibition in 1973. She is a long-serving Board Director and supporter of the event. She also sponsors artist projects, having assisted the Biennale to commission new works by artists such as El Anatsui, Douglas Gordon, Sheila Hicks and Lee Mingwei.
Mami Kataoka is the Artistic Director of the 21st Biennale of Sydney and Chief Curator at Mori Art Museum, Tokyo.
Biennale Archive Stories is a series of talks and interviews investigating the Biennale of Sydney’s 40-plus-year history with witnesses and protagonists. Approaching its 21st edition and 45th year, the Biennale considers its role over time, both in Sydney and the region. What can we learn from its achievements and controversies? What is its relevance today?
