A recurring occurrence: biennials and perennial exhibitions of contemporary art
As the spread of coronavirus cases continues to escalate in the country, the São Paulo Bienal faces uncertainty, and might cease to be an ‘obstinate’ repetition, as Vilém Flusser had termed at the occasion of its tenth edition. With the coming of the 70th anniversary of the São Paulo Bienal (2021), we invite contributions for a thematic publication on biennials and perennial exhibitions. Our objective is not that of celebrating the local event, but rather that of proposing a broader discussion on biennials, triennials, documentas and related exhibitions, aiming to analyse it in a twofold perspective. On the one hand, the biennials are institutions with more than one hundred years of existence, that since the late nineteenth century have played an important role in the formation of an international circuit for modern and contemporary art, equally promoting the rise of cultural consumption and tourism that accompany large scale events. On the other hand, the proliferation of biennials in the last three decades in several countries make the ‘biennalisation’ a specific phenomenon of contemporary art and a characteristic trace of the ‘global turn’, linked to new geopolitical configurations of the arts and its transnational markets. Nevertheless, the reflections about this contemporary realm seem often to disregard long term perspectives as well as institutional historical approaches. This issue aims to address both dimensions concomitantly: the specific movement post-1989 and, at the same time, the historical transformations of the biennial model through the past one and a half century. Hence, addressing ephemerality as well as permanence, taking into account the material and immaterial legacies left by such recurrent events. Finally, we would like to promote a critical reflection on the biennial model, in view of the current crisis that might threaten its very continuity.

Uma ocorrência recorrente: bienais e exposições periódicas de arte contemporânea
No atual momento de escalada dos casos de Covid-19 no país, ainda pairam dúvidas sobre a repetição ‘obstinada’, conforme anotou Vilém Flusser na ocasião da décima edição da Bienal de São Paulo. Perto de completar 70 anos de existência, em 2021, existe a possibilidade de que um novo hiato devolva a exposição aos anos ímpares, como quando de sua criação. Sem pretender aderir ao tom celebratório ou mesmo se restringir ao evento paulistano, este dossiê abordará as bienais, trienais, documentas e afins, procurando articular duas dimensões poucas vezes analisadas simultaneamente. Por um lado, as bienais são instituições de mais de um século de existência, com reconhecida importância desde o final do século XIX, tendo desempenhado papel fundamental tanto na formação de um circuito internacional para a arte moderna e contemporânea, como para a promoção do consumo cultural ligado ao turismo e aos grandes eventos. Por outro lado, a proliferação das bienais nas últimas três décadas, nos mais diversos países, fazem da ‘bienalização’ um fenômeno específico da arte contemporânea e um traço característico do ‘global turn’, correlativo às novas configurações da geopolítica das artes e de seus mercados transnacionais. As reflexões sobre esse contexto contemporâneo se fazem, porém, com frequência, sem articulação com a perspectiva de longa duração e a história institucional. Pensar esse movimento específico pós-1989 e, ao mesmo tempo, as origens e transformações de modelo Bienal ao longo do último século e meio, é a proposta deste dossiê. É necessário pensar efemeridades e permanências, heranças materiais e imateriais deixadas pelos sucessivos eventos, e propor uma reflexão crítica que se torna tanto mais urgente diante de um possível esgotamento desse modelo, cuja sobrevivência se vê ameaçada pela crise atual.

Created by Research Group MODOS – Art History: modes of seeing, exhibiting and understanding, MODOS Art Journal aims to publish texts that discuss artistic, critical and historiographical work focused on the visual arts in its various dimensions, highlighting the exhibition venues, circulation, collections and narratives that establish how we view, interpret and promote art and the art object. MODOS Art Journal brings together researchers from six Brazilian public universities (UNICAMP, UFRJ, UnB, UFBA, UERJ and UFRGS), engaged in their respective graduate programs. It will accept articles (in portuguese, spanish and english), translations, interviews and reviews, as well as texts for thematic dossiers, organized by researchers invited by the Editorial Board or by the Editors.
