The call for applications opens today for the first Venice Biennale College (Arte), which will begin with a workshop to be held this autumn 2021. The goal is to complement the International Art Exhibition with a workshop for advanced training, research and experimentation to develop and produce projects by emerging artists ages 30 and under from all over the world.
The international call for the Venice Biennale College Arte will remain open for six weeks, from Wednesday, June 16th to Monday, July 26th 2021.
The call is reserved for emerging young artists ages 30 and under from all over the world (they must not yet be 31 on the date of the deadline for the submission of the applications), who have participated in at least one group exhibition and whose work has been the subject of at least one solo exhibition held in nationally and/or internationally recognized exhibition spaces.
A selection will be made of 12 projects and the artists will be invited to participate in a 10-day workshop dedicated to the development of their project proposals, to be held in Venice during the month of October 2021.
The workshop will alternate individual and group sessions, and will be coordinated by the Director of the Visual Arts Department, Cecilia Alemani, together with curators and artists, tutors and mentors working directly with the participants on the development of the projects.
At the conclusion of the workshop, the artists will have 3 weeks to work on their projects and deliver a final proposal. After reviewing the materials, Cecilia Alemani will select up to four projects, which will receive a grant of up to 25,000 euro for the realization of the final work.
The artworks will be presented out of competition in the context of the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, Il latte dei sogni / The Milk of Dreams, curated by Cecilia Alemani.
The President of La Biennale Roberto Cicutto has stated:
«With the inception of the College Arte, La Biennale offers yet another significant opportunity for young artists to widen the range of their professional networks and above all to form relationships with other young artists and established professionals. The artists will be accompanied through a new and fundamental phase in their growth by the curator of the International Exhibition and by the tutors who will support them. After Cinema, Dance, Theatre, Music and the Historic Archives, Art could not eschew this opportunity for further development that has characterized the activities of La Biennale for many years. I am grateful to the Curator of the Biennale Arte 2022, Cecilia Alemani, for having agreed to meet this new challenge, which burdens her with additional responsibility and effort. But I am certain that the results, which will be achieved starting next year and for many years to come, will most certainly reward the commitment invested in it.
La Biennale is pleased to welcome even more young artists into its family, and wishes them the best of luck in embarking in this extraordinary new experience with us.»
The advent of the College for this new discipline will prove to be of crucial importance for the Visual Arts Department of La Biennale. This programme of permanent activities, “beyond the Exhibition”, is thus configured in a new and original way, aimed at fostering the development of new creative energies.

Venice Biennale College
Biennale College is the project by La Biennale di Venezia dedicated to training and supporting young artists in all the artistic fields and in the specific activities of La Biennale’s organizational structure. Already operating in the Cinema, Dance, Music, Theatre Departments and the Historic Archives, Biennale College was conceived with the ambition to promote young talents, offering them the opportunity to work closely with international mentors to develop “creations” that will become part of the programmes of the artistic Departments.
