3rd Asia Triennial Manchester
Conflict and Compassion
27 September to 23 November 2014
Director: Alnoor Mitha
A major initiative of MIRIAD, Manchester School of Art at Manchester Metropolitan University, Asia Triennial Manchester 2014 is a festival of visual culture that will feature a series of powerful exhibitions, commissions and creative interventions by international and UK artists. Sited at IWM North and multiple venues across the city, the Triennial will present new site-specific work alongside existing pieces not seen before in the UK, and will challenge stereotypical viewpoints of contemporary Asian artistic practice.
Taking as its theme Conflict and Compassion, Asia Triennial Manchester 2014 will investigate whether the role of the 21st century artist or curator may be, in part, to provide a voice for the unheard, a message to the dominant, or even to demonstrate some kind of sympathetic vision of values through the visual. Focusing on artists who live in, work in or address issues surrounding Asia, the next Triennial will present international and UK based artists whose work will respond to the theme and IWM North’s unique architecture and archives to create new work or show work not seen here before.
