The guiding concept of the Biennial will be BORDERS

The notion of edges resides in linear elements, like boundaries between phases. The edge is rupture and union, structure and sign. Edges are both signs and lines that constrain spaces. They are articulations that relate and link together two or more fields; they are features that organize the space; they are reference and sign. Edges are, however, consistent and penetrable. They redefine themselves; they broaden their influence; they move; they construct and reconstruct themselves; they dissolve, they disappear; they are finite.

The border and delimitation that determines a unit, the physical boundary or the virtual transition, is the edge. This border, which can be described geometrically, has its correspondence, at the same time, in ideas and concepts, in the sphere of the material, in the imagination or in fiction. It is both a geometric and a social convention.

The border is, therefore, a geographic concept, an epistemic reference and a social convention that is open to interpretation, analysis or experimentation in the context of the Biennial of the Frontiers.
