The third issue of the documenta 14 magazine South as a State of Mind #8 [documenta 14 #3] has been published.
In the two years leading up to the opening of the documenta 14 exhibition in 2017, South as a State of Mind, a magazine founded by Marina Fokidis in Athens in 2012, is publishing four special documenta 14 editions, edited by documenta 14 Editor-in-Chief of Publications Quinn Latimer and Artistic Director Adam Szymczyk. Writing and publishing are an integral part of documenta 14, and South heralds its literary production. Featuring critical thought, art, and literature, South as a State of Mind parallels the work on the documenta 14 exhibition and helps frame its concerns with essays, allegories, conversations, poetry, and visual projects by some of the most clarifying writers and artists working across the world today.
After examining forms and figures of displacement and dispossession in the first issue of South, and the more enigmatic tropes of silence and masks as means of aesthetic and political engagement in the second, the third issue of the documenta 14 South as a State of Mind explores the theme of “language or hunger.” That is, the third volume of the documenta 14 South concerns the constant correlation among nature, capital, power, and language. Its essays, poems, scripts, manifestos, and parables articulate—in disparate ways—the necessity of language while considering consumption and hunger as political and aesthetic facts and fields that determined our past and will construct our collective future. For, as Chickasaw poet Linda Hogan notes: “Here is a lesson: what happens to people and what happens to the land is the same thing.”
Contributions by Nabil Ahmed, Sotirios Bahtsetzis, Natasha Ginwala, Tshibumba Kanda Matulu, Tina Modotti, Neni Panourgiá, Pope.L, Gene Ray, Glauber Rocha, Cecilia Vicuña and others explore forms and histories of language and lexicon, as well as political ecology and environmental violence, all come from the dark entanglement of capitalism and colonialism. They consider climate and conflict, famine, hunger as resistance, and the intersection of Indigenous activism, anti-capitalist political ecologies, and land rights issues. Featured too are a newly commissioned essay and series of images by Moyra Davey, poems by Lisa Robertson and Synnøve Persen, artist projects by Lala Rukh and Roee Rosen, and conversations with composer Joaquín Orellana and painter Gordon Hookey.
To launch the third issue of the documenta 14 South as a State of Mind, related public events will be held in Athens and Kassel during the coming months. More detailed information about these events will be available at the documenta 14 website soon.
And in addition to the print version of South as a State of Mind, redesigned for documenta 14 by Mevis & van Deursen, Amsterdam, South is available in three languages—German, Greek, and English—in an online edition of the magazine that you can find here: documenta14.de/south.
