Located in the unique setting of the Unesco World Heritage Centre of the Dolomites, the Biennale Gherdëina produces site specific contemporary works of art, which are exhibited in the public space of Ortisei and surroundings. The Biennale Gherdëina always had a strong emphasis on creating a dialogue between innovation and the wood sculpture cultural heritage of the valley, a century-old tradition known all over the world.
The Biennale Gherdëina was founded by Doris Ghetta in 2008 as a parallel event of MANIFESTA7 in South Tyrol. Historically the contemporary wood sculpture has represented the main focus of the event; edition after edition the contaminations have grown and the internationalization of the event has lead to a wider spectrum of works of art. Today the Biennale is an exciting blend of sculpture art, performances, conferences and talks which often meet/intersecate – and in turn influence – the fascinating tradition of the Gardena Valley.
In six editions the Biennale Gherdëina had the opportunity to work with curators such as Adam Budak, Luca Beatrice, Günther Oberhollenzer, and produced among others works by Alicja Kwade, Marzia Migliora, Anna Hulačová, Claudia Comte, Sonia Laimer, Nicola Samorì, Franz Kapfer, Christian Kosmas Mayer, Stefan Papčo, Mathilde Rosier, Egill Sæbjörnsson, Jiří Příhoda, Alessandro de Francesco, Velasco Vitali, Bruno Walpoth.
