SITElines
“Unsettled Landscapes” will open July 13, 2014, and be on view through January 2015.
The SITElines series represents a six-year commitment with biennials occurring in 2014, 2016 and 2018, organized by different curators from throughout the Western Hemisphere.
When SITE Santa Fe opened in 1995, it launched what was then the only international biennial of contemporary art in the U.S. and one of only a handful from around the world. In the past 18 years, biennials have spread across the globe. In 2011, SITE asked a group of prominent contemporary art experts, including artists, curators and educators, to reconceive its biennial concept.
SITElines is the result, with each edition linked by a geographic focus on the Americas.
The 2014 show will address the urgencies, political conditions and history informing the work of contemporary artists across North, Central and South America. Through three themes –– landscape, territory and trade –– the event will illuminate the connections among representations of the land, movement across the land, and economies and resources from the land.
Irene Hofmann, SITE’s Phillips director and chief curator: “For SITE’s new biennial exhibition, we bring new focus to the geography that links us to two continents, many countries, many languages and cultures, many histories and many experiences. Just a few miles from here is the Pan-American Highway, a network of nearly 30,000 miles of road that links Alaska to Argentina. Today we announce that the new focus of our biennial exhibition will be on contemporary art from the Americas.”
The 2014 curatorial team will comprise Candice Hopkins (born in the Yukon, Canada, she lives in Ottawa and Albuquerque); Lucia Sanroman (born in Guadalajara, Mexico, she lives in Boston and Mexico City); Janet Dees (SITE curator of special projects); and Irene Hofmann, SITElines director.
Satellite curatorial advisers will be located in Trinidad, Costa Rica, Singapore, Mexico City, Buenos Aires and Toronto.
