16th Tallinn Print Triennial
„Literacy / Illiteracy“
February 7 – August 1, 2014
Curator: Maria Kjær Themsen (Denmark)
Concept
The 16th Tallinn Print Triennial project titled LITERACY – ILLITERACY / KIRJAOSKUS – KIRJAOSKAMATUS continues to deal with this old topic with the goal of finding new development scenarios for graphic media in presenting a selection of Nordic, Baltic and international artists and print makers, that work in the field of both the classical genre of graphic as well as digital medias.
For the 16th Tallinn Print Triennial new approaches will be taken to integrate a discussion about the relationship between the tradition of printmaking and contemporary approaches, digital or analogue, to the genre.
Besides the main exhibition at the Kumu Art Museum, the triennial offers different new collaborations and co-operations to make the triennial an active knowledge and production site.
The selected artists have, for the most part, been invited to make new works specifically for the triennial. For some it will result in research in the archive of the triennial, and for others it will be direct collaborations with the local art scene and public.
The investigation of the reproduction techniques and the aesthetic and expressive strategies, be it classical or contemporary, that apply to them, opens up a complex field of the most diverse questions to concepts such as: original and copy, production and reproduction, presentation and representation, ultimately leading to the question of how the message of an art work can be interpreted.
